How would you respond if someone asked you, “What does the holiday season mean to you?” That’s the question that was posed to 11 local artists who created the murals for this year’s Winterlit at Third Street Promenade. In a year that’s been anything but traditional, they were asked to reimagine their own holiday traditions through works of art.
Complemented by an augmented reality app that you can download on your phone, the masterpieces are just part of the wintry celebration. The self-guided art tour throughout downtown Santa Monica includes a foray into a festive holiday display featuring tens of thousands of twinkling lights. It opened on Friday, November 27th and runs through January 3rd, so you have the entire holiday season to come and check out the decorations. While you’re at it, snap a photo in front of the City of Santa Monica’s holiday tree. It towers over Third Street, set against a canopy of festive strings of lights and capped off with a glowing star. The outdoor exhibit is free and open to the public.
